Admission Requirements

Whether you are a first-year, transfer, or graduate student, international students must meet the same academic requirements for admission to a program as students from the United States. 

Merit scholarships for international students are available based on review of a complete application.

In addition to the standard application, international students must also submit the following:

Transcripts from secondary schools outside of the United States may be reviewed if they are provided in English and adhere to a United States format or are received with an official grading scale.

Transcripts that are not provided in English, do not adhere to a United States format and/or are not provided with an official grading scale must be translated by any NACES approved translation services. Most students opt to use the translation services below:

International Students who are not from a country whose official language is English, or whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency by submitting official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing (IELTS), Pearson PTE, GTECH CBT, or Duolingo results. Students may also elect to take the SAT or ACT exams. Minimum passing scores on the English section of those exams will be the determining factor for proper English proficiency.

Minimum scores are as follows:

  • Written TOEFL – 550; online TOEFL – 80
  • IELTS – 6.5
  • Pearson PTE – 58
  • GTECH CBT – 1100
  • SAT EBR+W – 550
  • ACT English – 22
  • Duolingo – 105

English Proficiency Waiver Policy

The English Proficiency Requirement may be waived if you meet the following conditions:

  • Citizenship, residency, and education completed in a designated English Speaking Nation
  • Attend a U.S. high school for four years and achieve B or better in English (non-ESL) coursework, and a 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Attend an International High School where the entire instruction is in English and achieve B or better in English (non-ESL) coursework, and a 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Previously earned three college credits with a grade of B or better in First-Year English Composition


Please note: all first-year students must submit one form of test score to complete an application for admission.

If the Office of Admission determines that you do not have English proficiency, you will be directed to apply to the English Language Service (ELS) program located on our campus. In this program, you live on the Manhattan College campus and take English courses with other international students. Once you gain the required English proficiency, you can apply for admission and make a seamless transition into our undergraduate program.
