• Personal statement (800-1000 words): Please address the following questions: What does it mean to be a mental health / school counselor? What influenced you to want to be a mental health / school counselor? What are your three biggest strengths? Your three biggest challenges? How will your strengths and challenges impact you as a student in the mental health / school counseling program and as a future mental health / school counselor? If your GPA is below a 3.0, this must be one of your challenges that you discuss. What influenced you to apply to Mercy University?

• A 5-page essay on the applicant’s reasons for pursuing the Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Shorter essays will not be accepted.

  • The applicant’s career goalsThis essay should reflect the applicant’s knowledge of what the field of MFT involves, include specific ideas and demonstrate the good writing skills required in graduate school.

• Two Letters of Recommendation: Letters of recommendation should preferably be from college instructors/professors, who can speak to the applicant’s ability to think critically and write academically. Applicants that have been out of school for an extended period of time are encouraged to submit letters from professional references, such as employers/supervisors, or other (non-family member) individuals who can attest to the applicant’s intelligence and potential to do graduate-level academic work.
• Personal Statement: Provide a brief statement that conveys your reasons that you would like to pursue a Criminal Justice Master of Science at Mercy University. Include your academic and professional background, career interests, and any experiences that have shaped your interest in this field. 500 words maximum.
